Grab a friend and join Capitol Land Trust and Black Hills Audubon Society on a bird outing to Inspiring Kids Preserve! Inspiring Kids Preserve is a 113-acre area protected for wildlife habitat and is not normally open to the public.
A variety of bird habitats are protected at Inspiring Kids Preserve. We will explore about two miles of trails through mixed forest uplands, freshwater wetlands and a salt marsh. Inspiring Kids Preserve is also the site of outdoor education initiatives and environmental restoration projects.
This is a free, beginner and family-friendly event. No parking pass is needed.
This event is limited to 30 participants because of parking availability. Please carpool if you are comfortable and able to do so. Cell phone service is limited at the preserve.

Trail information: The trails are a mixture between dirt, grass, and gravel and are uneven in spots. The birding route will likely travel up/down a trail with some incline/decline. A portion of the trail will be soggy/muddy. There is a portable toilet available for use the parking area. The trails are not wheelchair accessible.
Please wear weather appropriate clothing for a slow pace, sturdy, closed-toed shoes.
Bring water and a snack your favorite birding tools (binoculars, scopes, camera, field guide, etc.). Merlin Bird ID is a great phone app for identifying birds in the field. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.
Participants must fill out an annual Waiver (2025) before participating with CLT. Minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult and have both pages of the Minor Waiver Release (2025) Form filled out. Minors 16 and older may attend the event without a parent or guardian with the Minor Waiver filled out ahead of time. You may print and fill out your waiver ahead of time and bring it to the event. Or, email it to [email protected]. Waivers will also be available to sign at the event.
