Shelley is passionate about protecting wildlife habitat. For her, monthly giving is an assured way to conserve the lands upon which wildlife depends.
Shelley credits reading Rachel Carson’s seminal book Silent Spring as a teenager as her wake-up call about the impact human activities have on wildlife. Years later, that formative experience led Shelley to turn her concern into action when she learned about a fledgling organization called Capitol Land Trust (CLT) that was dedicated to conserving land and wildlife habitat in perpetuity.

In the same year CLT was founded, Shelley joined CLT’s Board of Directors and served for four years. As a young mother at home with small children, she saw it as a chance to become more involved with the Olympia community she called home. It was also an opportunity to focus on her passion for the environment and spend time with other like-minded people.
At the time, CLT was an all-volunteer-led organization that had just completed its first project in Woodland Creek. The organization was also about to receive its first land conservation easement donation from William Aldridge, which continues to permanently protect 120 acres of wetland, forest and meadow habitat today.
Shelley and her husband Jeff continue to support the work of CLT by giving a set amount of cash each month.
She says, “We really admire the work of CLT. My early sense of commitment to the organization’s mission is just as strong today as ever. We plan to keep supporting them through monthly giving for years to come.”
Monthly gifts provide foundational support for land conservation.
Having the assurance of monthly gifts is very important to a non-profit like CLT. CLT depends on individual donors like Shelley and Jeff to support conservation, restoration and outdoor learning opportunities. Giving through monthly donations lends certainty that CLT will be here, acting locally, to keep our community a great place for both people and wildlife.
Monthly giving is an easy way to show support for local conservation. For Shelley, it gives her continuous satisfaction of knowing she is doing something positive for wildlife today and into the future.
She says, “CLT is a good fit for Jeff and me because the organization protects important wildlife habitat in perpetuity. Since my early involvement with the organization, they have made great strides in protecting ever more natural areas that our native plants and animals depend on to survive. We know that these places will be there so that wildlife can thrive today and into the future.”
