Jim is passionate about supporting conservation through giving monthly to CLT.
“It feels good to be back at Darlin Creek Preserve,” says Jim Sherrill. “This place was special to a dear friend who passed away recently. He valued this preserve and loved telling stories about its geologic history. I might bring my hiking club back here.”
After days of spring showers, it is a brilliant morning in Olympia, and Darlin Creek Preserve is damp and glistening in the sunshine. Walking with Jim Sherrill along the trail the sky is blue with white clouds overhead and birds flit in the trees. Jim is a Capitol Land Trust (CLT) board member, and he has agreed to meet at Darlin Creek Preserve to talk about something he feels very passionate about: supporting conservation through giving monthly to CLT.
Conserving land is an important priority for a lot of people. For some, it is borne out of a desire to preserve the special character of the place they call home. For others it is about setting aside permanent habitat for wildlife. For Jim, a lifelong outdoorsman, it’s about the opportunities that conservation provides for young people to spend time in nature.
“I’ve spent a lot of time outdoors throughout my life. My early outdoor experiences in particular helped shape who I am. Even today I love getting outside to camp, hike, hunt, fish or harvest huckleberries and wild mushrooms. I believe land trusts are in a great position to not only preserve, but to provide access to nature for future generations.”
Land trusts are community-based nonprofit organizations that actively work to permanently conserve land. Land trusts work in their communities to conserve habitat for wildlife and plants, secure water quality, ensure land is available for future generations, provide equitable access to nature, protect family farms and ranches, tackle climate change, build healthy communities and so much more.
Monthly gifts provide sustaining support for our land conservation efforts.
“One of the main reasons I choose to support CLT is because of the work they do with kids,” Jim says. “Their efforts to engage young people about conservation on their properties in a hands-on way is important and is something I believe in.”
People like to donate to CLT in different ways and at different times of the year. Jim found that donating monthly best suited his giving preferences.
Jim says, “I donate monthly because it’s easy. And throughout the year the amount adds up. It feels like I’m making a difference. My monthly gift comes out of my IRA automatically each month. I asked my financial planner to set it up so I don’t have to remember to do it each month. I just set it and forget it.”
If, like Jim, you are passionate about conservation, consider becoming a monthly donor. Monthly donors choose to give a set amount of cash each month.
Because monthly contributions from donors are so essential, CLT has made it easy for its supporters to provide this sustaining support. Follow this link, enter any amount you wish to give, and click “Make this donation monthly.” Or, like Jim, if you work with an IRA administrator, you can schedule monthly disbursements from your IRA account.
The compounding effect of monthly contributions has a direct and positive impact on CLT’s ability to protect and preserve important natural spaces in our region.
